Earliest Swimming Turtle Fossils Found -- New Species

Fossils of the earliest known swimming turtles have been uncovered on an island in northwest Britain, scientists reported today.
The fossils of the previously unknown species suggest turtles first took to water during the Middle Jurassic period (180 to 160 million years ago).

Four crushed but intact skeletons had been found along with the remains of two other specimens, in a single slab of rock in 2004 on Scotland's Isle of Skye. Since then, researchers have painstakingly freed the fossils.
The fossils belonged to a pond turtle, Eileanchelys waldmani, which bridges the evolutionary gap between primitive land turtles and modern aquatic turtles.

Turtles first appeared in the Triassic period some 210 million years ago. They were exclusively land creatures, said study team member Jérémy Anquetin, a French Ph.D. student at the Natural History Museum in London.
These earliest turtles were heavy, lumbering creatures armed with thick shells and protective spikes, he said.
But the new fossil turtle had a domed, tortoise-like shell measuring up to 11.8 inches (30 centimeters) long and it was much more delicately built.
"It's light framed, just like an aquatic turtle," Anquetin said.
"Until the discovery of Eileanchelys, we thought that adaptation to aquatic habitat might have appeared among primitive turtles, but we had no fossil evidence of that," he added.
"Now we know for sure that there were aquatic turtles around 164 million years ago," Anquetin said.

Shark "Virgin Birth" Confirmed

A female blacktip shark in Virginia fertilized her own egg without mating with a male shark, new DNA evidence shows.
This is the second time scientists have used DNA testing to verify shark parthenogenesis—the process that allows females of some species to produce offspring without sperm. (Read about the first time.)

The female shark, dubbed Tidbit, died during a routine physical exam before the pregnancy was identified.
A necropsy—an animal autopsy—after her death revealed she was carrying a near-term pup fetus that was about 12 inches (30 centimeters) in length.
Tidbit was caught in the wild when she was very young and reached sexual maturity in a tank at the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, where she lived for eight years.
"The interesting thing about that was there were no male blacktip sharks in the tank for the entire time of her captivity," said Demian Chapman, a researcher with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University in New York.
"So the question is, where does this baby come from?" he asked.
Chapman is the lead author of a study on the female blacktip in the latest issue of the Journal of Fish Biology.
DNA fingerprinting
Chapman and his colleagues generated a DNA fingerprint for the mother shark and her pup fetus with a procedure identical to a human paternity test.
Ordinarily, a shark's DNA contains some genetic material from its mother and some from its father. Tidbit's pup, however, was not ordinary.
"Every part of the fingerprint of the embryo comes from the mother," Chapman said. "In other words, there is no genetic material from a father."

The shuttle was cleared for a Friday launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida earlier this week, despite a 30 percent chance that a cold front could stir up rain and thick clouds.
Besides seven astronauts, Endeavor's cargo includes two new sleeping chambers, a second toilet, and a water-purification system, all of which will let NASA double the occupancy of the International Space Station to six.
The new mission is the 124th space shuttle flight and the 27th to the International Space Station. The seven-member crew will spend 15 days performing basic maintenance on the station before returning to Earth.

Hiding in the mountaintops of a cloud forest in Indonesia, these little Gremlins weigh about 2 ounces, have large eyes, claws instead of fingernails, and are covered in fur to keep warm in the damn and cool environment.

Last seen in 1921, the Gremlins were thought to be extinct until this recent discovery.
We only hope the Indonesians will keep them out of the sun, dry, and avoid feeding them after midnight.

He also enrolls Swapna in an acting school run by Shiva Reddy. Shyam meets with a major accident and the injury on his head makes him colour blind. While the colour in the life of Shyam has gone out, Swapna manages to make a big impression in Tollywood and she becomes a successful heroine. The rest of the story is what happens to Shyam’s love for Swapna and what happens to Swapna’s dream of making it big as an actress

The hero bears with all their tantrums as he needs the 10 lakhs desperately. Meanwhile Supraja falls in love with the hero. Even Kota is ready for the marriage. But Srikanth objects to this sing that he is not fit for Suprja as there is a vast difference in their social status. There is some confusion as the hero signs the papers in the hospital for the treatment of Gowri Munjal as her husband, as he does not know her name or her identity. Gowri is actually Kusalya, eldest daughter of Kota. She runs away from home with Sivaji, son of Tanikella Bharanai, a bitter enemy of Kota. Bharani tries to kill Kauslaya and this is how she goes into a coma. With all the confusion cleared, the way is now clear for Sriram to marry Supraja. With this, the film ends on a happy note.

He says that a film hero needs to know martial arts, horse riding etc, and he can get all this training free of cost at the at the police academy. A bunch of people coming from different walks of life joins the academy. They include Brahmanandam, Bhavana, Rajesh and others. Police commissioner Naga Babu is trying to bring to book a dreaded criminal who is responsible for the brutal murder of IPS officer Ram Mohan Rao. But an evil and corrupt businessman Kota Srinivasa Rao shield the villain in order to save his own skin. The bunch of cadets goes on with their training at the police academy and Radha slowly falls in love with Krishnaveni (Bhavana). One day it is announced on TV that Krishnaveni is the chief of a naxalite group and is wanted by the police. She is whisked away from the police academy the same night by some unknown persons. Is Krishnaveni really a naxalite? Or has she been implicated in a false case? Who exactly is Krishnaveni and why has she enrolled herself in the police academy? Answers to all this and how Radha, with the help of his fellow trainee cadets, helps his father in bringing the culprits to book, forms the basis for the remaining part of the story. In the end, Radha becomes a ‘Hero’ in real life as his father always wanted him to become.

The film Yuvatha is all about friendship and love for life. Director Parasuram manages to weave a light hearted and feel good movie right trough the first half. However, post interval, the film move on to a serious plane and the twists and turns and heavy sentimental scenes take the sheen away from the youthful and light hearted entertainer that Yuvatha was touted to be.

Story: Babu (Nikhil) loses both his parents in his childhood and his maternal uncle grabs al the property in his name in the name of giving him shelter and raising him. Babu is a happy go lucky guy without a care in the world. He does not do any work and also neglects his studies. After his uncle scolds him for being a good for nothing fellow, Babu leaves his native place Kesavaram and lands in Hyderabad where his friends are staying. One of them is a Ajay, software engineer and he is waiting for his visa to go to the US. Another guy is an aspiring director who dreams of making a film with Pawan Kalyan. The third wants to become a police officer but is at present working as a private security guard. Ajay is in love with the Madhavi (Monali Choudhary) daughter of the landlord. Babu meets Baby (Aksha) and it is almost love at first sight. Baby is studying medicine. Babu and his friends give a big treat to Baby on her birthday. But a rowdy makes some lewd comments against Baby and an enraged Babu bashes him up. The rowdy attacks the friends the next day and fatally injures Subbu, the aspiring director. Subbu is rushed to the hospital and the doctors tell the friends that five lakhs is required for surgery. The friends try all means but fail to arrange the money. Then one of the friends thinks of borrowing the amount form a gangster Narsing Yadav. The gangster gives them the required five lakhs on the condition that they will return it along with interest within one week. When the friend fail to pay up after one week, the gangster bashes them up and give them another 48 hours to cough up the amount. With no other option, Babu and Ajay in association with the friend who is working as a security guard plan to rob a securities firm that is responsible for loading money in ATMs. When the two friends enter the strong room, they find it empty. When they try to leave the place, the police arrive on the scene and take them into custody. Babu and Ajay are no in jail on charges of stealing 20 crore from MS Securities. Who is the real robber? How do Babu and his friend manage to wriggle out of the case forms the basis for the rest of the story. Performance: Nikhil is the hero and h does a convincing job in his role of a carefree youth who is ready to do anything for his friends. Aksha debuts as heroine in Tollywood with this film. She plays the role of a medical college student. She is good looking and sensuous. However, she needs to hone her acting skills a lot. Monali Choudhary and Randhir are okay in their roles. Sayaji shinde plays an inmate in the prison and he raises some laughs with his obsession for the sexy Simran. Jeeva as ‘Sonu Seth – Hyderabad ka Baadsha’ manages to raise some laughter. Jayaparakh Reddy as the jailor goes about his job in a routine fashion. There are some good one-liners that draw a lot of applause from the audience. In one scene, Nikhil says “Iddaru Kalisthe Pudatham, Naluguru Moosthe Potham”. In another scene Nikhil says “Alochinchukuni cheyyadaniki idi vyapaaram kadu – friendship”. The title song Yuvatha …Yuvatha…Yuvatha…’has been filmed well and shows the friends in a playful mood. There is also an item song in the prison. Music by Mani Sarma is okay. Director Parasuram manages to make the film quite enjoyable in the first half but he has put too many twists and turns in the second half. The heavy sentimental dialogues by Nikhil also affect the light hearted mood that was so enjoyable in the first half. The film is targeted heavily at the youth and the fate of the film now rests entirely on their patronage.

Google has added SearchWiki to their Web Search to give users more control over their search experience. SearchWiki lets users customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. With just a single click users can move the results they like to the top or add a new site. They can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that they don't feel belong. These modifications will be shown to users every time they do the same search in the future. UK 'ahead in digital TV uptake'

Digital television is spreading faster in Britain than in France, Canada, the US, Germany, Italy and Japan, according to UK communications regulator Ofcom.
Research suggests that 86% of homes in Britain can now receive digital on their main set, while 30% have digital video recorders.
Ofcom also says British consumers pay less than those in other countries for TV, mobile phones and broadband.
The report also says people in Ireland send the most text messages.
The regulator found that last year the Irish spent an average of 179 minutes on their mobiles each month and sent nearly twice as many text messages as people in the UK.

Mammoth's genome pieced together

A US-Russian team of researchers has pieced together most of the genome of a woolly mammoth, Nature journal reports.
The experts extracted DNA from samples of mammoth hair to reconstruct the genetic sequence of this Ice Age beast.
Though some stretches are missing, the researchers estimate that the genome is roughly 80% complete.
The work could provide insights into the extinction of the mammoth and also resurrects questions about the viability of cloning long-dead species.
The scientists were aided in their task by the fact that several deep-frozen carcasses of woolly mammoths have been dug out of the permafrost in Siberia.
These conditions are ideal for the preservation of hair, which is a preferred source for the extraction of ancient DNA.

Bush attacked over wildlife plan

US environmentalists have accused President George W Bush of trying to rush through changes to the Endangered Species Act in his last days in office.
They say the changes could take away protection for animals and plants facing possible extinction.
The Bush administration wants to make it easier for drilling, mining and major construction projects to go ahead without a full scientific assessment.
Under current rules, the impact of such projects must be assessed by experts.
The changes proposed by the Bush administration would let federal agencies make the decisions without a full scientific assessment as to the likely impact on the environment.
Republican supporters of the changes, along with developers and some federal agencies, argue that the current system of environmental reviews causes delays to projects, pushing up costs.
The White House denies that the late spate of rule changes is politically motivated.

India praised for sinking pirates

An anti-piracy watchdog has welcomed the destruction of a suspected Somali pirate vessel in the Gulf of Aden by an Indian navy warship.
INS Tabar sank the pirate "mother ship" after it did not stop for investigation and instead opened fire, an Indian navy statement said on Wednesday.
There has been a surge in piracy incidents off the coast of Somalia.
The latest attack came days after the Saudi-owned Sirius Star supertanker and its 25 crew were seized by pirates.
The supertanker is now anchored off the Somali coast.

Katrina Kaif homesick in New York

Katrina Kaif is currently shooting in New York with John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh for Kabir Khan's next venture, but she isn't too happy being away from home and family.
'My professional commitments keep me busy, but I'm feeling homesick. I miss my family a lot. I miss my home,' said Katrina, who has been shooting for 'New York' for over two months.
The actress is, however, keeping content with plans for a Christmas reunion with her family.
'I am trying my best to see if we can all be together. I hope no professional work comes up then. I am keeping my fingers crossed,' she said.
Katrina was seen in this year's biggest hit 'Singh Is Kinng'.
