SEATTLE: Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, convicted last month on federal ethics charges, has lost his bid for re-election, bringing the Democrats within two seats of a filibuster-proof majority.
A lengthy count of early and absentee ballots finally produced a definitive lead for the Democratic challenger, Mark Begich, on Tuesday of 2374 votes, with about 2500 to count.
"I am humbled and honoured to serve Alaska in the United States Senate," Mr Begich, who is mayor of Anchorage, said after the largest remaining block of 24,000 ballots were counted late on Tuesday.
The results give the Democratic Party seven new Senate
