Oldest Turtle Found; May Crack Shell-Evolution Mystery

Fossils of the oldest known turtles, unearthed in southwestern China, may help answer an evolutionary enigma—how did the turtle get its shell?
The 220-million-year-old animals did not have full shells, or carapaces, on their backs, researchers found.

But the newfound creatures did sport fully developed plastrons—the flat part of a turtle shell that covers and protects the belly.
The discovery supports the theory that turtle shells formed from the underside—plastron first—and grew bony extensions of ribs and bone formation above backbones that eventually joined to form the classic shell that exists today.

Wounded Iceman Made Epic Final Journey, Moss Shows

The Iceman (seen above, in an illustration of his last moments) apparently dressed his own wounds with moss, a December 2008 study found. The plant discoveries help piece together his last journey, showing that the fit 46-year-old traveled at least 37 miles (60 kilometers) in a few days.

"Hell on Earth" in Zimbabwe

Author Alexandra Fuller grew up in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia, where her family still lives. She now resides in Wyoming with her husband and three children. Fuller is the author of three works of non-fiction, including the memoir Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood. On the 60th anniversary of the United Nations' Declaration of Universal Human Rights, she reflects on the disease devastating her former home of Zimbabwe.
If it was President Robert Mugabe's intention to organize hell on Earth, he has succeeded. It's December in Zimbabwe, and that means the rains are frequent and the sun is at its hottest. The harvest—predicted to be ridiculously inadequate—is half a year away. Electricity is sporadic. No garbage has been collected for months. There has been no running water in many cities for days. Zimbabwe is a steam-bath of infection. Cholera, that most medieval of diseases, and the ultimate indication of a state that has failed her people, is rampant. Violence spills over. I follow every new development because those are my people, in that hell.

Pacific World War II Wrecks Pose Risk of Toxic Leaks

Scuba divers explore the wreck of the coral-covered U.S.S. President Coolidge, a luxury cruise liner-turned-troop ship sunk by mines in 1942 as it entered the harbor of Vanuatu's Espiritu Santo Island. Some 3,700 World War II shipwrecks lie submerged in the Pacific Ocean. Encased in coral, host to abundant sea life, and popular among scuba-loving tourists, some of these vessels also contain oil, gasoline, chemicals, and unexploded ordnance. The Coolidge is not known to pose risks to divers.

breaking news New Bizarre Monkey Group Found

No, these monkeys haven't gone ape for plastic surgery.
The strange-looking Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, only found in two Vietnamese provinces, naturally has a narrow, upturned nose and full, pink lips.
Until recently, scientists believed there were just 200 of the animals, which are listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.
Habitat loss, as well as bush meat hunting and demand for parts of the animal in traditional medicine, has pushed it to near-oblivion.
But when villagers in Vietnam's Tung Vai Commune along the Chinese border reported monkey sightings, a team of biologists from Fauna and Flora International (FFI) went looking for the animals in April 2008.
The explorers spotted 15 to 20 snub-nosed monkeys (above, one of the adults), including three infants, and it's likely more groups have yet to be discovered, they said.
(Related photo: "Rare Monkeys Spotted in Vietnam" [July 3, 2007].)
Conservation biologist Le Khac Quyet, an FFI expert on the species, was "overjoyed" at the recent discovery.
"There is still time to save this unique species," he said in a statement.
"But with 200 or so left and threats still strong, we need to act now."

As Tigers Disappear, Poachers Turn to Leopards in India

Police show leopard skins that were confiscated from smugglers in New Delhi, India, on April 7, 2005.A recent spike in leopard-skin seizures suggests that as tigers dwindle in India, poachers are turning to leopards to fuel the illegal wildlife trade, experts said in 2008.

A recent flurry of leopard-skin seizures by Indian wildlife authorities suggests that as tigers decline, poachers are increasingly on the prowl for the country's other big cat.
At least 141 leopards have fallen to poaching so far in 2008, compared to 124 leopards killed in 2007. In contrast, 24 tigers were killed so far this year, according to the New Delhi-based nonprofit Wildlife Protection Society of India.

Ghajini tattoos brew trouble again

Just a few days before its release, A.R. Murugadoss’s Ghajini (Hindi) starring Aamir Khan is in the news, again for the wrong reasons. Just a few weeks ago, Aamir Khan ended up inadvertently publicizing a doctor’s phone number through the film’s publicity material showcasing his sculpted physique full of bizarre tattoos; one of them being a mobile phone number. Just a month after appeasing her with profound apologies, a new instrument and new number, the method actor is facing a similar trouble again!
One more number tattooed on Khan’s muscled physique turned out to be real. The 50-year-old (Mumbai-based) industrialist to whom it belongs has been harassed by “nonsense calls”. The gentleman suffers from severe hypertension and all these “nonsense calls” he has been getting of late have worsened his condition further. He has sent a legal notice to the actor and production company seeking compensation for the “mental pressure” the incident caused and has also sought immediate removal of his number from the publicity material. Apparently Mr. Singh has been using this cell phone number for his business contacts and is not ready to surrender it or change it.
Unfortunately, the assistant director or whoever is responsible for picking dummy phone numbers had been too careless. The crew could have bought a few SIM cards and used those numbers for the tattoos. That way, no one would have gotten into trouble. Ah, yes! If the crew decides to use those numbers, then they will have to bear the brunt of prank calls!

Terror vs Investors

Terror vs Investors
The 1993 blasts couldn’t keep the investors away. Will the recent attacks on Mumbai impact the economic interests?
Singh's three-pronged war
It was the safest part of the city
Does this mean that there is no reason to worry about the economic effects of terrorism in India? Hardly. India faces critical choices today that will determine whether it continues to foster investment rather than descend into a pit of persistent violence that deters productive economic activity, and makes it an unattractive destination for investment. Answers to four questions hold the key to avoiding such a poverty-conflict trap, from which it is difficult to emerge.
First, how do we respond to Pakistan? In the past week, tensions have risen again. Desiring revenge is only human, but we ignore the dangers of such sabre-rattling at our own peril. Far, far more damaging to India's economy than an isolated terrorist attack, however painful, would be another confrontation with Pakistan. Its consequence would be to plunge India into an extended period of increased insecurity, forcing potential investors to reconsider the best setting for their business.
Second, how do we create a sense of security about future attacks? Without taking anything away from the armed forces that bravely battled the terrorists last week, these attacks made clear the state's lack of preparedness to tackle modern terrorism. The shoddy state of our transportation and utility infrastructure makes the Indian economy extremely vulnerable to an attack on its roads, railways, harbours, airports, electricity grids, dams and so on. A terrorism policy for the 21st century must take seriously the immense task of securing these vital assets on which hundreds of millions of Indians depend daily. Yet, success in such an endeavour can only be achieved if we are willing to take drastic steps to reform an antiquated bureaucracy that is woefully ill-equipped to handle the reins of an aspiring superpower.
Third, how do we reform a society in which human life is cheap? November 26 attacks are just the tip of the iceberg of an extremely violent society. Across India, insurgent groups brazenly challenge the state's legitimate monopoly on violence. Citizen kills citizen because of caste, religion, language, and region; women and children are violated by those who should be their protectors; farmers are destroyed by crushing debt; and millions of untold others live out their lives in quiet desperation with little hope that they might ever lead lives they have reason to value. Such societies can easily foster further violence: in such a Hobbesian state of nature, economic expansion is difficult to envision for outsiders. A fundamental challenge therefore is to re-establish the basis of our community, a monumental task in a society as diverse as ours but one that is vital to our future.
Finally, how do we fight those who would do us harm while remaining open to new ideas, investment, and people from around the world? Simple! We do so by remaining open to new ideas and new people, resisting the twin temptations of putting up fortress-like walls and expelling from within those we deem to be different. For generations, people have flocked to Bombay because of its willingness to adopt anyone who wishes to make a new life there. This constant influx of talent fuels Bombay's entrepreneurial spirit and provides the energy that makes it India's economic engine. But when outsiders no longer feel welcome, when a first-time visitor can no longer arrive at the Gateway of India and instantly feel at home, then Bombay will be lost and, with it, investment in India and its dreams for its future.

Quantum of Solace

Review's

Agent 007 is an extremely angry man in his latest action adventure Quantum of Solace. You really don't want to mess with this guy; he won't think twice to shoot you down and walk briskly away.
Quantum of Solace (QOS) is the second James Bond film with Daniel Craig and the first Bond movie sequel. Casino Royale ended with the betrayal and murder of Bond's first ever true lady love; in QOS, he is all out to extract his revenge, while also bringing down the bunch of baddies who plan to wreck the environment.
Bond finds himself in a rather precarious situation in this movie. He has identified the enemy, none other than the wily Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) who is assembling a cartel of international business magnates to control the world's water supply. But the British and American governments want Greene on their side, and the Foreign Secretary tells Bond's boss M (Judi Dench) that if she doesn't pull Bond out of the field, 'the Americans will put him down'. And so Bond is pretty much on his own this time, more than on any previous occasion, where M was merely reprimanding his reckless conduct and not his choice of mission. But as we all know, Good prevails over Evil and Bond saves the day while also avenging the death of his lover.
When Daniel Craig took on the garb of James Bond, he gave the character a whole new personality, right from his muscular build to his 'no time for making love' attitude. The new Bond girls are not around to merely shed their clothes and bed Agent 007. They have their own scores to settle and come across as powerful personalities in their own right. There may not be those hot scenes, but the adrenaline rush is all there in some rather breathtaking action scenes that bring you to the edge of your seats.
Quantum of Solace is one heck of an action-packed celluloid trip that Bond addicts and all movie buffs will greatly enjoy.

Madonna: Britney, Don’t get married

Pop Queen Madonna has supposedly advised Pop Princess Britney Spears not to get married again! Britney performed with Madonna during her Sticky and Sweet Tour earlier this month, and it is said that Madonna dropped the advice when Brit asked her if she would marry again now that she has split from Guy Ritchie.
"Britney asked Madonna if she will ever marry again after her split from Guy. Madonna not only said she wouldn't, but told Britney to forget about marriage. She said it just doesn't work for girls like them,” a close pal of Madonna revealed, adding, "Madonna clearly sees a lot of herself in Britney because she seems very eager to help her."

Jennifer turns down John

Jennifer Aniston and John Meyer were on, then off and now, are on again. Shortly after the reunion, it is said John proposed to Jennifer, who surprised one and all by saying no! She supposedly rejected his proposal because she fears marriage might damage their relationship that only recently went through a rough patch.
“Jennifer said no when John asked her. She told John that everything is so perfect between them right now, they shouldn’t ruin the focus of their relationship,” an informed source revealed. “A wedding would be so stressful and Jennifer just wants to enjoy this phase, falling madly in love and getting a thrill if the other one texts when they are apart.”
But her rejection has not deterred John, who has hope that they will take the plunge eventually! A friend of John says, “John told Jennifer she is the girl for him and he is sure of it. He is willing to do anything she wants as long as they are together. He is like a different guy. John was over the moon when Jennifer took him back last month and he never wants them to be apart again. He really wants to settle down with her. He wants children, marriage, the whole thing at some point.”

Britney refuses lesbian role

Lesbian? Never!: Troubled pop singer Britney Spears, who is working on a comeback, won't play a lesbian stripper in Quentin Tarantino's new movie.

Britney’s tell-all documentary Kaanchan [November 19, 2008, 5:55:51 PM]
In a 90-minute documentary titled "Britney: For The Record", Britney Spears says that ever since her breakdown, her life has been worse than a jail sentence. "I have really good days, and then I have bad days," she says in the film that will air in the U.S. on November 30th and in the U.K. on December 1st. Adding, "Even when you go to jail, you know, there's the time when you're gonna get out. But in this situation, it's never-ending. It's just like the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day. I'm having to pay for it for a really long time."
In January, Britney was hospitalized for mental evaluation and lost custody of her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline. Then her father, Jamie Spears, gained legal control over her affairs. But now the star is now on her path of healing. She’s making some great music and is once again on top of her game.
For three months, a camera crew followed her as she struggled to get her life back on track. "I wanted to make this film because I started to feel like I wasn't being seen in the light that I wanted to be seen in," she said. "This is an opportunity to set the record straight and talk about what I've been through and where I'm headed. I think I've learned my lesson now, and enough is enough."

Big Mommy Britney

Teenaged mom: In her first interview since having a baby last month at age 17, Jamie Lynn Spears, the little sister of pop wreck Britney Spear, described the experience as the best feeling in the world.

Britney’s comeback awarded!

Britney Spears has been honoured with one of Germany’s most coveted media awards in recognition of her stunning come back. Britney is the proud recipient of the country’s Bambi award for Best International Pop Star – an annual TV and media prize awarded by the Hubert Burda Media Group. According to event organisers, the pop princess is seen as an inspiration after she returned to singing with a big bang following a rather traumatic year that included visits to the rehab, trouble with police, a divorce and the loss of custody of her kids. Event host Hubert Burda said, "Britney Spears is back. Radiant and better than ever, the erstwhile teen idol has reclaimed her throne!"

Taking on terrorists with World War-II guns

While the focus of the media may have been on the terrorist attacks at the Taj and Trident hotels, it was at the Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus, the lifeline of Mumbai, where the maximum casualties took place. It was at CST, where a group of 8 policemen with World War II-era rifles took on superbly trained terrorists, armed with AK-47 automatic rifles. The eight brave policemen were Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Narayan Chavhan, ASI Anandrao Desai, constable Dhondiba Chandane, constable Nielkant Khanolkar, constable Sohail Sheikh (rifle), constable Anand Mayekar, constable Raghunath Choudhar and driver Vishwas Andhale. They fought the armed terrorists with nothing but their 303 rifles, just after two terrorists had opened fire on unsuspecting commuters, and escaped onto the streets. The policemen, some near retirement, dodged bullets and grenades forcing the terrorists to escape towards Cama hospital. "When we realized there was firing at CST, I told my team to grab their rifles and take positions," said constable Dhondiba Chandane, Pydhonie police station. For many of the policemen, it was the first time they had ever fired a bullet while on duty. Others had not pulled the trigger for well over a decade."I first once in 1984 during the riots and another during the 1993 riots," said constable Dhondiba Chandane, Pydhonie police station. The battle may only have lasted a few minutes but the policemen say it's taught them the lesson of their lifetime."Now we will always be alert," said ASI Narayan Chavhan, Pydhonie police station. Now, bullet holes at CST are a chilling reminder of the gun battle that took place there on November 26. But before the wounds heal and memories fade, it is important for the government to arm our guardians of law with assault weapons to combat the new age terrorism

Antony warns of airborne terror threats, calls for alert

With India's coastal security already breached by terrorists in Mumbai, Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday warned the armed forces of possible terror attacks from airborne platforms similar to the 9/11 attacks in the US.Antony asked them to be prepared to counter the threat of terrorists from the air and prevent a repeat of World Trade Centre-type of attacks carried out by the Al-Qaida.At a meeting with the three Services chief and Defence officials, Antony called for greater coordination among all security and intelligence agencies so as to make the intelligence inputs actionable. The meeting, attended by Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major and Army chief General Deepak Kapoor and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, also reviewed the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan in the wake of reports that its army was on a "high alert" following the Mumbai terror attacks.Antony, sources said, worked out measures with the armed forces for tightening security and vigil along the LoC to prevent infiltration of terrorists through the land route, as "Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is known to be an important area for recruitment and training of terrorists."The top defence brass discussed plans for beefing up coastal security and hastening acquisition process for systems and platforms including coastal radars and interceptor boats.Of particular concern expressed at the meeting was the intelligence warning that airports around the country could be targets of terrorists, forcing the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to issue a red alert to secure all important airports, sources added.

US, India discuss Mumbai attacks

Wednesday, December 03, 2008 7:43 AM (Washington)
Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon met with top US officials on Tuesday to discuss efforts to find the terrorists behind last week's deadly attacks in Mumbai, the US State Department said.Menon met Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Under Secretary Bill Burns on the eve of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's scheduled arrival in New Delhi. The US has sent a team to India to assist authorities in the investigation of Wednesday's coordinated attack on hotels and entertainment venues in Mumbai that left 188 people dead and hundreds wounded. The attack appears to have originated from a group in Pakistan, and the issue has increased tension between the neighbouring nuclear powers, which have three wars over territorial disputes since partition in 1947.Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Rice urged the Pakistani government to cooperate in the investigation. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates would not comment on allegations that the attack was planned by militants in Pakistan."I don't want to get into the intelligence that we have," he said. "I'd like to commend the Indians for their restraint at this point."

BPOs, IT firms step up security measures

Wednesday, December 03, 2008 10:09 AM (Mumbai)
As terror strikes take on new and frightening dimensions, there are fears that Indian outsourcing companies, the backbone for global MNCs, could become soft targets for terrorists. The BPO industry alone employs seven lakh employees, who all can potentially access sensitive data and they are now under scrutiny.Every IT and BPO company is now stepping up background checks on its employees to avoid terrorist attacks. After all almost 70 per cent of the outsourced work from the US and Europe come to these back offices in India. Crucial data and operations reside here and employees have access to it all, which if under attack, can hamper their businesses substantially.Corporates like Infosys are also beefing up internal security but they want the government to do much more."We need to have something like citizen identity card, which can establish uniform identity. Database will help intercept in critical times," said Mohandas Pai, director, HR, Infosys."Earlier we used to do background checks after we had committed appointment letters. Now we have gone a step ahead and doing this before handing out the letters," said Pradeep Bahirwani, VP, Talent Acquisition.

Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust donates blood to Mumbai's 26/11 victims

While India and the rest of the world were horrified and spell bound by the ghastly drama being played out from November 26th at the 'in' spots of Mumbai, Chiranjeevi once again proved that he is more than just a megastar.
He called on his fans to extend all the help they can to the victims of terror and also offered to donate blood through his blood bank, the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust, which is also conducting blood donation camps in Mumbai. The actor-turned-politician also called for better security for the common people and pointed out that all the political parties have to show a united and solid front during these tragic times.
Galatta.com team extends our condolences to the bereaved families of Mumbai's terror victims.

Terror suspects whom India wants

The top, most-wanted men that India wants Pakistan to hand over include Dawood Ibrahim an underworld figure, suspected to have masterminded the 1993 Bombay
blasts, in which more than 250 people died. The leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Maulana Masood Azhar is also among India's most wanted. He was freed from an Indian jail in 1999, in exchange for passengers of IC 814 which was hijacked to Kandahar. The Indian government has also demanded Lashkar-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Mohammed Saeed to be sent to India.Leader of pro-Khalistan outfit, Babbar Khalsa international Wadhawa Singh that Pakistan is reportedly protecting is also among the men India wants.

Nicole Kidman hated? (HOLLYWOOD)

People who have never interacted with Nicole Kidman on a personal level, seem to have an intense dislike for her. Thus is quite evident by the ‘I hate Nicole Kidman’ campaigns and discussion forums on certain social networking websites! One person called Avi Aronstan says, "She is manipulative, calculating and two faced!" and then a blogger called Jarrod Booth writes “she has the emotional scope of a spoon and she's ugly,” for no apparent reason. She has been nickednamed Ice Maiden by some and her performance in her recent film Australia has been torn to shreds, with many agreeing that she was highly overpaid for it.
Nicole who is the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and her friends are shocked by these comments that appear to be baseless. Those who know the actress well describe her as being a practical, sensitive and hard-working woman who is thoroughly committed to her family. But the wrong notion on the world wide web, spread clearly by someone who has a grudge against the actress, is going to be a hard one to dissolve.

Kaveri Jha: Next big Bollywood bombshell

Kaveri Jha, who gave Telugu audiences sleepless nights with her performance in the Jagapathi starrer Nagaram, is now ready to storm Bollywood. Touted as the next big thing to hit Bollywood after Deepika Padukone, she has acted in Hijack (Hindi) opposite Shiney Ahuja, which didn't do too well.
With 3 back-to-back releases, she will definitely come to the notice of Hindi audiences and become a national sensation. Right now, ex-air hostess Kaveri Jha has around five films on hand in the South. Ooha Chitram (directed by Satya, produced by K. Paidababu under Likhit Arts Banner and music by Siva R. Nandigama) is almost complete and the producers expect to release it in January 2009.
Kaveri Jha is also starring opposite Sivaji in Naa Girl Friend Baaga Rich, directed by M. Nagendra Kumar and produced by Kumar Brothers. This film too will release sometime in December 2008 or January 2009. This is Kaveri Jha's second Telugu movie after Jagapathi Babu's Nagaram.
The Hindi adaptation of the Iranian movie Children of Heaven directed by Priyadarshan, Bum Bum Bole, sees Kaveri in the role of Atul Kulkarni's sister. Atul plays Darsheel Jaffery's father and Rituparna Sengupta plays his mother.
According to Kaveri's publicist Flynn Remedios, she has also signed a few big banner Bollywood films. “She is currently shooting in Hyderabad, but you can expect some big announcements when she is back in a couple of weeks,” he said.Read the News in Tamil

Terror Hits Bollywood

New Delhi, Nov 30 (IANS) As Mumbai tries to recover from the terror attacks that shook and shocked the city, speculation is rife whether these strikes would effect fundamental changes in the portrayal of violence in films and other media.
Cinema halls have been symbolically shut, film releases deferred, live shows cancelled and England' cricket tour truncated. But will the slowdown in showbiz be the only reaction or would tinsel-town denizens take a leaf out of Hollywood's book and take stock of the social purpose of entertainment?
When the twin towers of ther World Trade Center fell in the Big Apple, Hollywood had made a conscious decision to stop and think before letting anything insensitive or offensive go on the marquee. Films depicting violence were dropped or rewritten, actors like Bruce Willis declared they would not do violent films and demand for movies with family values shot up.

I have faith in my audience - John Abraham

DOSTANA is a success and John Abraham is obviously feeling great, especially due to the fact that he saw a release to his name a year after he was last seen on the big screen in DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL. 'I am very happy with the success of DOSTANA. Of course, it is the second in row but I know that GOAL was mainly an average successful film. Somehow producers too never advertised its success much due to which the right perception was not created. But that's ok, it happens. I have moved on', smiles John who is looking at an eventful 2009 ahead. 'Whatever the critics may have had to say in the past, the fact is that I have faith in my audience. That's because it understands what I stand for; I am someone who does fun films. Some of them may be experimental, different, but my aim is to always entertain them', says John emotionally, 'Ultimately audience too moves on to the next film and this is what happened with me too even after the BAABUL and SALAAM E
